The Practice

Psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, families, seniors, and couples

Credentials:

Licensed clinical social worker in both New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Member of the National Association of Social Workers.

Therapeutic Approach:

I draw from a number of psychological theories and therapeutic orientations. These include cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems theory, supportive psychotherapy, solution-focused therapy, and attachment theory. Currently I am studying a science-based approach to mental health called Interpersonal Neurobiology. Whenever appropriate, I enjoy using life coaching techniques. My clients come to therapy with their own unique backgrounds, issues, and concerns. I work collaboratively with them, drawing from whatever theories and techniques appear best-suited for each individual. Research in the field of mental health has shown that positive change and personal growth occur most easily within the context of a supportive relationship. I strive to create a warm, caring, and respectful atmosphere in which my clients can feel comfortable.

Clinical Interests and Background:

I have 15 years of experience working with clients of all ages and with a variety of clinical issues. I have worked in different settings, including schools, hospitals, and community mental health centers. I enjoy helping people to manage relationship issues and to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. My experiences in working with adults with severe and persistent mental illness have made me a valuable resource for family members of people with illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.  I'm also an excellent resource for those newly-diagnosed with celiac disease. I myself have celiac disease and have learned a tremendous amount about area resources, strategies toward adapting to a gluten-free diet, and what is involved socially and emotionally in changing one's eating habits and lifestyle. I am very happy to share my knowledge with others to make their journey toward health that much easier.

In 2008,  I led a group of volunteers to create the first edition of The New Mothers Resource Guide of the Greater Seacoast. The current guide's website is www.newmothersresourceguide.com, and its purpose is to promote the physical and emotional well-being of pregnant women and new mothers living in the Seacoast area. In creating the resource guide, I developed a strong interest in working with new mothers.

My Bachelor's degree is in Art History from Bowdoin College, and I hold a Masters of Science- Social Work (MSSW) degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
A native of New Hampshire, I spent nearly 10 years living outside of New England before choosing to return to New Hampshire and settle down. Places where I have lived and worked include Seattle, Washington; Fargo, North Dakota; Boulder County, Colorado; and Madison, Wisconsin. I strongly value diversity and find it rewarding to get to know people with different backgrounds.
